Artist's Statement:
Inspired by the fauve painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, my current
body of work focuses on a broad range of colors, emphisizing light, shadow and
composition. I used their post-impressionistic style as a jumping off point for
creating a contemporary approach to still life painting. As subject matter, I chose
simple images that symbolized the summer season, flip-flops and seashells.
Before working in my current style, in 2006, I experimented with organic
abstraction. Borrowing techniques from the “color-field” painters of the 1960’s,
I adopted of method a glazing (applying multiply layers of thin color) to create
large-scale atmospheric landscapes – intentionally minimal in nature to evoke a
sense of stillness in the viewer. Both series of works are painted in oil on canvas. |
