Van Dyke Brown over Pigment

I’m drawn to older photographs and have been trying to find a way to marry historical processes with modern equipment. The Van Dyke brownprint is an iron based photo process, as opposed to the more familiar silver print and has been around for a very long time. The name is derived from the brown pigment favored by the famous Dutch painter of the same name, which is very similar in color to these prints.
These hybrid prints are made by laying down small areas of color on the paper using an archival quality injet printer, followed by the application of a photosensitive solution. A large negative is produced at the same size as the final print and then is laid down on the paper in registration with the color under a glass plate. This “sandwich” is then exposed to light and developed to produce the final print. Each print is one of a kind due to the freehand nature of the coating process.
