toned and hand painted gelatin silver print
14" x 14"
I paint my black and white photographs to alter the mood of the image. I want the piece to give a soft impression of color, without having color be the dominant motif.
All of my images begin as a handmade silver gelatin print, which is then put through a toning bath to enhance the warmth of the image, as well as add to it's archival stability. Then, the images which are to be hand painted are coated with a solution which allows the paints to blend seamlessly and become extremely translucent. A multitude of blended oil paints (which are archival for photographs) are applied to the entire surface of the print, often in numerous layers, as a suggestion of color, changing the mood of the original black and white image, while drawing the eye into specific areas of the image.
Being completely handmade, each piece is original, no tow are exactly alike. -Lisa Tyson Ennis
