In this group of paintings that might be called the Falling or Floating Man series, I am intent on creating a world that reflects the emotional and spiritual state of an individual 'everyman' while at the same time facusing on the overwhelming impact of the physical world. These paintings are very autobiographical and as such are derived from personal dream images as well as the junk and treasure of my family household. I aim, however, to create images that are larger than my own experience and that reflect truths about being an adult in 21st Century America. I embrace the forms of both high and low culture that crowd our landscape. I am also motivated as much by humor as I am by a yearning for worldly insight, and so I give myself some license, both in the distortion of form as well as the depiction of phyically impossible events that are metaphorically apt. A friend once dubbed this series 'existential vaudeville', and I think that this is a good summation of their spirit.
